Fresh Fall Fashion

Top Trends from the Fall Fashion Week 2020 Runways and How You Can Wear Them Now

There were plenty of fun fashion trends that popped up on nearly every fall fashion week runway this year. You may think that these bold couture looks aren't attainable for the average human, but you should change your mindset. Even the most over the top fashion trends can be toned down and made suitable for everyday wear. In this article, I'm highlighting my favorites and giving you some examples of how to wear them right now. Fashion is so much fun! Don't be timid. Experiment with some of these looks, and strut your fashionable self right into Fall.

1) Puff Sleeves

Rodarte

The puff sleeve trend has been around for a while and looks like it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The puffs seem to be growing more prominent and dramatic. However, some looks like the above Rodarte dress worn by Bella Hadid on the Fall/Winter 2020 runway are very demure and feminine. I love a small puff sleeve and think it creates a beautiful shape to the shoulder. You'll find this romantic, whimsical accent on everything from dresses and tops to sweaters and jackets.

2) Cropped Blazers

Eckhaus Latta

I've been wearing a lot of cropped cuts lately, so this cropped blazer trend is right on point for me. I can strut my bare midriff right into fall! I'm not a fan of too much bare belly though, i.e., Brittany Spears circa 1998. I only like to show an inch of skin max. I prefer to pair with high waisted pants and skirts. With these cute little blazers, you can get the look without showing skin at all. Pair with a cute dress and flats for work or a bodysuit, jeans, and heels for a cute night out on the town outfit.

3) Slinky Metals

Tom Ford

Slinky chain mail-esque pieces were seen all over the Fall runways this year. Sexy and edgy, they drape and contour beautifully over the body as if almost custom made for the wearer. A bit on the daring side, but oh so hot. Some of the pieces show a fair amount of skin, but you can also find some full-coverage looks. Try a full-length dress of armor or opt for a less dramatic version of the look by adding a metal top under a blazer for a peek-a-boo pop of edginess.

4) Marigold

Fendi

The beautiful sunny Marigold pieces seen on the runways this year were absolutely gorgeous. Part of the mustard family, this color is the perfect way to incorporate some yellow into your fall closet this year. I like to pair it with various shades of olive green, winter white, and tan. Go full color with a dress and coordinating heels or use as an accent color via a bodysuit, skirt, or handbag.

5) Column Dresses

Bottega

Column dresses create a beautiful, elegant silhouette, and there was no shortage of this style on the runways this year. Designers like Bottega Veneta delivered drool-worthy versions of this style complete with embellishments like sequins in soft neutral colors. The floor-length look elongates and slims the body while being very forgiving. The fancier ones are perfect for a holiday party, while simpler versions can be worn both day and night.

6) Colored Leather

Proenza Schouler

Leather is synonymous with fall and winter fashion. It adds a luxe textural element and can elevate any ho-hum look to sexy and edgy in a flash. This year, the fabric received a refreshing makeover and emerged in fun and fresh colors. Throw on a colored leather jacket over any outfit or try something more unexpected like a leather skirt or jumpsuit.

7) Ruffles

Carolina Herrera

Ruffles upon ruffles bounced their flirty selves all over designers 2020 Fall collections. Over the top layers of the feminine embellishments were everywhere, and the bigger and more dramatic, the better. The size and sheer volume of these runway ruffles aren't exactly conducive to everyday wear, but there are plenty of pretty and feminine pieces out there that star the trend in a more delicate way. Try a neutral-toned sweater with ruffle accents or go with a romantic silk ruffle-trimmed dress in a rich jewel tone.

8) Classic Blue

Adeam

This super-saturated and eye-catching shade of blue was spotted strutting its stuff down many of the Fall runways this year. Designers like Adeam created gorgeous pieces in the blue made from luxe silky fabrics. I've always loved to wear blue, but I have to say that I haven't come across this medium-toned shade as much as some of its lighter and darker cousins. Go with a monochromatic look or accent with some accessories like a belt, earrings, or pumps in this cool color.

9) Bra Tops under Cardigans

Jonathon Simkhai

The cardigan set gets a racy revamp this season, and I'm totally here for it. Cute little cropped tops or bralettes made their skin-baring appearances under the classic button-up sweater style. This makes for a cute casual look that is surprisingly not too over the top sexy. Fabrics like cashmere add a softness to the look. Go for longline bra styles if you don't dare to bare too much or a barely-there bra for the fearless fashionistas. You can't go wrong by pairing this trend with jeans or a skirt. For extra dressed down looks, try it with a pair of high waisted joggers or sweatpants and sneakers.
